PROJECTS

The Kitsumkalum School construction project in British Columbia involves the development of a new ‘Na Aksa Gyilak’yoo School building on Kitsumkalum First Nation territory, located near Terrace in northern British Columbia. This multimillion-dollar initiative, with construction beginning following a ground-breaking ceremony on April 20, 2022, aims to replace outdated and temporary school facilities that had reached the end of their serviceable life. The new school, spanning approximately 1,200 square meters, is designed to provide a modern, culturally supportive learning environment for Kitsumkalum youth, emphasizing three key focuses: culture, language, and individual student support.
The project was executed in phases. Phase 1, jointly funded by the Kitsumkalum First Nation and Indigenous Services Canada, includes the construction of the main school building, which features a bus loop, parking, and a circular playing field. The First Nation contributes both capital funding and building materials, while CCM Construction Ltd, was awarded the construction contract. A design committee from Kitsumkalum collaborated with architects to shape the building’s exterior, reflecting the community’s cultural identity.
Phase 2 involves the future addition of a gymnasium, with fundraising efforts ongoing. Notably, the Prince Rupert Port Authority has pledged $200,000 through its Community Investment Fund to support this expansion. The new facility replaces structures like the former health center and a building previously owned by School District 82, marking a significant upgrade to educational infrastructure.

Tahsis Search and Rescue

The Search and Rescue building in Tahsis, British Columbia, located in the heart of Nootka Sound on Vancouver Island’s rugged west coast, is a modern Canadian Coast Guard station designed to enhance maritime safety in the region. Construction began in May 2019 as part of the Government of Canada’s $1.5 billion Oceans Protection Plan, with the facility opening in 2020. This station is strategically positioned to respond to marine emergencies in Nootka Sound and the northwest coastal waters of Vancouver Island, an area identified as needing increased search and rescue capacity due to its challenging waters and active marine traffic.
The building itself is a purpose-built, two-story structure that reflects a practical yet contemporary design, tailored to the operational needs of the Coast Guard. It houses a 14.7-metre lifeboat, capable of rapid deployment for 24-hour, 365-day-a-year operations. Its construction incorporated input from the Mowachaht-Muchalaht First Nation, blending local knowledge with modern engineering to optimize its location and functionality.
Situated near the waterfront in Tahsis, the station benefits from direct access to the inlet, facilitating swift launches into Nootka Sound’s intricate network of waterways. The design prioritizes durability to withstand the region’s temperate rainforest climate, characterized by mild, wet winters and warm summers. This search and rescue station stands as a vital asset for the small coastal community of Tahsis, supporting both local mariners and the broader marine ecosystem, while symbolizing a collaborative effort between the federal government and Indigenous partners to safeguard Canada’s western shores.
